SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. – The Mahopac High School boys basketball team opened their season on the road last Wednesday (Dec. 4), and couldn’t find a rhythm in a 60–46 loss at Spring Valley.

“We got off to a slow start (five points in the first quarter), but after that we hung in,” coach Tom McMahon said. “We were down 10 for most of the game, and in the fourth quarter we made a nice run and got it to five. But we couldn’t make enough plays to complete the comeback.

“We had some key turnovers that really cost us during the comeback,” the coach added. “With a young team, that’s not unexpected. Obviously we want to win, but with an inexperienced team, this is a process.”

Vin Bastone led the way for Mahopac with 11 points and 7 rebounds, John Cosentino added 6 points and 5 assists, and Matt McMahon and Patrick McMahon each finished with 6 points.

“Costentino gave us some great minutes,” the coach said. “But he was in foul trouble, so he saw limited time. Vin had a really good game, we really relied on him a lot, and Matt McMahon also gave us some good minutes.

“Colum Ranaghan played nice defense and rebounded well off the bench,” the coach added. “And Luke Syku and Ryan Reilly were very solid for us.”

The Indians were set to play in the Somers Tournament this weekend, and will host New Rochelle at 6:30 p.m. Monday (Dec. 16).
