MAHOPAC, N.Y. - The Mahopac boys basketball team turned up the defensive intensity in a strong second quarter against Lourdes Friday Dec. 21, and held on for a 65-52 victory in a game played at Mahopac High School.

The teams played to a 17-17 tie after one, but the Indians held the Warriors to 8 points in the second, while dropping another 17 on the offensive end, good for a 34-25 halftime lead.

“Overall, we played a good game,” Indians coach Matt Simone said. “Our defense was a little slow early, but after the first quarter they really dug in. We only allowed eight in the second, so our defense was focused. When we’re focused, and take care of the defense, we’re a good team.”

Senior forward Reahl Allen had his best game of the season with 21 points, junior guard Matt McMahon had 14 points (including four three-pointers), and Tim Cegielski added 8 points. Vin Bastone came up with three blocked shots and 4 points, and Nick Burtt chipped in with six.

“We tried to get the ball to Reahl,” Simone said. “He finished well around the rim, did a great job. Matt also did a good job, and when he’s on, it helps our other players.

“Vin gave us some good minutes,” Simone added of Bastone. “And Nick Burtt played some hard minutes on defense, limited them to one shot.”

Mahopac (3-4) was scheduled to host Ramapo on Jan. 4 at 6 p.m.
