Mahopac Smothers Rival Carmel

January 11, 2017 at 11:22 AM

CARMEL, N.Y.— Inching back to a 4-6 record after gaining back three key seniors from injury, Mahopac rode its rock solid man-to-man defense to a 41-26 victory at Carmel on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

The Indians led by just five at halftime, but turned on the jets to score 25 second-half points. Their defense never slacked in the huge road win over the Rams.

“The one thing we did well is we played a pretty good game defensively,” Mahopac coach Chuck Scozzafava said. “We did a good job of not letting them score in the first period. There was also a little more balance with the scoring.”

Junior forward Claire Felix guided the Indians once again with 12 points, while junior shooting guard Zina McInerney scored nine points. Siobhan Hynes registered six points and senior forward Amanda McCarney had five.

In her returning game from a sprained ankle, senior point guard Amanda Geyer netted five points.

Friday’s home game against Ketcham wasn’t the same cohesive effort, as Mahopac fell 52-41 while losing every quarter by small margins.

“We played each quarter very well,” Scozzafava said. “Our biggest problem has been turnovers. We turned it over about 13 times in the second half. It was just a matter of us not doing a good job on the boards. Defensively, we played pretty well.”

Felix led the way with 20 points and McInerney chipped in with 11. Hynes tacked on five points and McCarney had four.

“The thing that hurts is we are making unforced turnovers a lot of times,” Scozzafava said. “We are just making bad passes, bad decisions. We were getting our shots. Unfortunately, we are not putting them down. Part of the problem is not hitting shots from the outside to complement our points on the inside.”

Mahopac hosts league rival Arlington on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 4:30 p.m.

King Andrew Has Spoken

So, there is now a deal to close down Indian Point by the year 2021. None of the local elected officials were part of these discussions. After all, why should they be? They only represent the people who will be affected, mostly negatively, by this deal. If there is anything we have learned during the reign of King Andrew the First, it is, “So it is written, so it shall be done.”

Standing up to Hypocrisy

I was navigating my way through the huge crowds waiting to check out at BJs just before Christmas, when I happened to find myself across from a small group of women heatedly discussing the recent election.  An attractive redhead—she appeared to be in her early 60s—was angrily berating three women standing just behind her, incredulous that they were talking about how they had ...

Taking the Plunge, for a Good Cause

On any New Year’s Day since 2013, if you happened to be at Riverfront Green in Peekskill, looking toward the Hudson River, you might think you hadn’t fully recovered from the prior evening’s festivities and were hallucinating.

But even stone cold sober, your eyes wouldn’t be deceiving you. Yes, that was a large throng of people running into the icy waters in summery ...

Once Upon a Sagging Mattress

“Help!” I cried out meekly.

“Where are you?” asked my husband, looking around the bedroom.

“I’m in here,” I responded. “In the mattress.” Truth be told, I wasn’t actually in the mattress. It was more like I was on it, but I was sunk down so low, it looked like I had been swallowed up by the mattress. Our very pricey and ...

I Want to Redecorate, but Where Do I Begin?

Since decorating mistakes can be very costly and time consuming, I always urge my clients to do their homework before undertaking any redecorating project.
