MAHOPAC, N.Y. - Mahopac volleyball picked up a win over Mount Vernon early last week, before dropping matches to Arlington and Pelham Memorial, to close the week at 2-7 overall, 1-1 in league play.
The Indians opened last week on Monday (Sept. 23), hitting the road, and easily beating winless (0-7) Mount Vernon in straight sets, 25-12, 25-10, 25-5.
Bella Marinelli and Mia DelBene each had 7 assists for Mahopac, and Marinelli led the team with 5 kills.
“We did what we needed to do, and didn’t underestimate them,” Indians coach Jay Melville said. “Caroline Link was second with three kills, and Bella and Mia gave us nice play.”
Two days later at Arlington, the Admirals (8-5) beat Mahopac in straight sets, 25-21, 25-16, 25-18. Marinelli had 7 kills, and Jenna Palmiero had 5, to lead the ‘Pac, Gabriella Rocchio had 16 digs, Colleen Kelly had 14 (and 12 assists) and Palmiero had 12.
“We just didn’t play well,” Melville said. “Our defense played pretty well, but we’re not capitalizing on good defensive play and getting kills. Our hitting percentage is very low… we’ve been working on it all season.”
Last Friday (Sept. 27) the Indians hosted Pelham Memorial (5-3), with the visitor posting a 3-1 win.
Diana Kone had 16 kills, Marinelli added 12, Rocchio came up with 21 digs and Palmiero had 20, Kelly had 22 assists, and Link had 10.
“One of our setters is dealing with shin splints, and the other was out, so Link stepped in, and did a great job for us,” Melville said. “When you don’t have your regulars, you’re asking someone to go out of their comfort zone. Kone was very good hitting for us, and Jenna and Gabby were also strong.”
The Indians are home Thursday (Oct. 3) vs. Carmel at 4:30 p.m., and visit John Jay (East Fishkill) Friday at 4:30 p.m.
