MAHOPAC, N.Y. – The Mahopac High School wrestling team struggled at last weekend’s Yorktown Dual Meet Tournament, going 2-3 at the 10-team competition.
The Indians opened with a loss to Westhampton Beach (48-36), before beating Roy C. Ketcham (54-27) and Glen Cove (58-24). Mahopac closed with losses to Yorktown (57-26), and Lakeland/Panas (48-37).
“Overall it was a little disappointing, because I thought we started the day strong,” said Indians coach Steve Tornambe. “We had a few kids out, and I think if we had them in the lineup we would’ve had a better day. But several of our guys stepped up.“
Sophomore Angelo Centrone (now 17-0 at 113), as well as Aiden Muldoon (now 15-2 at 120), and Tyler Roa (now 17-0 at 152), all went 5-0 on the day. Roa, a senior captain, also earned his 100th career win, closing the day with 103 overall.
Freshman Chris Morris went 4-1 for Mahopac at 99 pounds, Larry Nardecchia (12-4 at 145) and James Russo (9-2 at 138) each won three of their four matches, and 132-pounder Ryan Kick (13-6) won three of his five matches.
“Morris, Ryan, Russo, they all wrestled very tough,” Tornambe said. “Angelo, Aiden and Tyler, those guys always step up in big matches, and they wrestled very well for us.”
Mahopac defeated Lakeland/Panas the prior Tuesday (Dec. 10) at Walter Panas High School, 51-36.
Morris, Centrone, Muldoon, Smith, Russo, AJ Watts, Nardecchia, Roa, and Carlos Miguel all picked up victories for the Indians, who improved to 11-5 in dual meet action.
Mahopac was scheduled to Host Fox Lane at 4:30 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 19), and the team will compete in the Scauzillo Duals on Dec. 28 at Mahopac High School.
