THORNWOOD, N.Y. – The Mahopac High School wrestling team performed well at divisionals—qualifying an impressive 13 grapplers for this weekend’s Section 1 championship tournament, with action opening Saturday at Sleepy Hollow High, and concluding Sunday with semis and finals at Clarkstown South High.
Sophomore Angelo Centrone and senior Tyler Roa, team captains, both took firsts at last Saturday’s Division II tournament at Westlake High School.
Wrestlers needed a top-four finish in order to advance to this weekend’s championships.
Centrone (second at last year‘s sectionals) improved his season record to 37-2, while Roa (third at sectionals last year), upped his season mark to 34-3.
Indians coach Steve Tornambe said the duo is peaking at the right time, and ready for this weekend’s tournament.
“They both looked tough,” Tornambe said. “Angelo beat a good kid in the finals, pinned him in the third, and had a dominant performance. Tyler has been moving well, he’s looking tough, and I think they’re both right where they should be.
“I think the picture looks great for both of them to advance,” the coach said. “Both of them are looking to get to the finals, and they’ll be fine if they can stay focused and keep their mind right.”
Xander Smith (106), Aidan Muldoon (120), Ryan Kick (126), Brock Fitzpatrick (170), Londrim Hasanramaj (220), and Larry Nardecchia (145) all took seconds at the divisional tournament.
James Russo (132) and Liam Condon (170) took thirds, and AJ Watts (138), and Safiullah Ahmed (195) both placed fourth in their respective weight classes. Mahopac‘s Sam Przymylski earned a wildcard at 106 pounds.
“A couple of the kids surprised me,” the coach said. “AJ taking a fourth was good for him, Liam looked very good. Ahmed came up big, that was nice to see. And it was good to see so many of our guys qualify. Six seniors and seven underclassmen—that’s a good thing.”
