SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The South Orange Historical and Preservation Society (SOHPS) is pleased to announce that they will be offering a $1,000 scholarship.  The essay competition is open to all High School Seniors residing in South Orange and Maplewood who will be entering an accredited institution of higher education in the Fall, 2014, semester.

In order to be considered students must submit an essay on the following topic:  Many of the streets in South Orange are named after prominent citizens from South Orange history, many of whom were also important in the growth and governance of South Orange.  In this essay contest, students will first select a street name that has historical significance, research the landholder and their family, describe how the landholder(s) influenced the growth and/or governance of the Village, provide historical facts regarding the landholders and describe the street as it is today and include whether any of the original structures attributable to the land holder still exist. 

Essays and cover page are to be submitted directly to the screening committee at  The essay must be between 1,000 and 1,200 words, in MS-Word or compatible format, 12 point type font, 1.5 line spacing, and one inch margins.  The essay must be accompanied by a bibliography.  Wikipedia is not an acceptable source.  A cover page must include the student's name, address, telephone number, email address, current high school, and the College or University the student will be attending in the Fall, 2014, with the school’s mailing address and telephone number.

All entries must be received by the screening committee no later than April 27, 2014.  The scholarship winner will be notified no later than May 27, 2014.   The winning essay will become the property of the South Orange Historical and Preservation Society and may be reproduced, distributed, and publicly displayed for the purposes of supporting the goals of SOHPS.
