MAPLEWOOD, NJ – James E. Oakes, a Maplewood police officer born and raised in Maplewood, and four of his colleagues officially became sergeants at a ceremony held during Tuesday evening’s Maplewood Township Committee meeting.

Kristen Prisco, Oakes’ sister-in-law, said the officer was elated to be promoted and has served on the force for fourteen years. Sergeant Oakes’ wife and children stood with him during the swearing in.  Police Officer Albert F. Sally, an officer for 11 years and a Kean University alum, was also promoted during the ceremony.

In other business, the Maplewood Township Committee discussed moving the school board elections to November since April voter turnout is low.  Also, as part of the “Complete Street” program, which is modeled after a similar program in Montclair, the town will begin putting up green “Share the Road” signs on various street poles in Maplewood to promote safety.
