Organization is the name of the game when assessing and assigning goals for the New Year. Be sure to implement a thorough process with sound communication, this will help you and your employees meet their objectives. The following tips all utilize organization and check points to help you develop goals for 2016 and beyond.
1. Have A Calendar – No matter what your goal is, you want to have actionable check points that track progress and determine if everything is going according to plan. Even short term goals that may seem intrinsic can have actionable steps. Make sure you map these out and check that the logic is sound. For any goal, you want to make sure the direction stays realistic over the course of its duration.
2. Divide And Conquer – Employees should have personal goals, but for the larger goals of the business, divide and conquer. Putting the right people on the right projects can save time and effort for you and your team.
3. Invest In Technology – These do not have to be big investments but any tools that you or your team see that will save time, invest in them. Anything from a two dollar app to a subscription software service that improves your process is a good thing. Investing in technology will help you achieve your goals more quickly and help revaluate future goals.
4. Checks and Balances – It is inevitable that obstacles will occur. When one does, make sure you focus on the end result and do not inflate the initial goal. Much like dividing and conquering, you should either make a whole other goal, or implement steps to overcome the obstacle with actionable items.
5. Be Realistic – People often mistake ‘realism’ for ‘complacency’. This should not be the case. When a small business owner is being realistic, they are just taking into account the work of others while simultaneously making the most of what they have. It is good to push your team and have them achieve things that they thought impossible. On the same token, being completely unrealistic on a continual basis is not conducive to a productive, happy team.
At the end of the day you hope to grow your business using the best practices. These five tips are always good to fall back on when developing a goal or making sure the goal will be achieved. In any team setting structure and communication is just as important as the result.
