preRiver Day, on Sunday May 6th in South Orange, had 500+ people in attendance. Visitors to River Day were treated to snacks and information, took a walking tour of the river, collected and cooked edible plants, rode with SOMbike, and enjoyed an afternoon of live music. But that was just half the story as the South Orange/Maplewood community gathered to have fun AND improve the local environment.
Volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got wet to clean up the South Orange section of the Rahway River. Working together they doubled last year’s haul by filling up 4 dump trucks with an estimated 2000 lbs of refuse! That’s literally a ton of stuff that won’t be fouling our water, endangering our animals, or washing up on our beaches this summer.
On behalf of the South Orange Environmental Commission and the River Day planning crew– thank you to all in the community who came out to make River Day 2012 a big success!
