Shaking Those Summertime Blues

Winter blues? Summer slack-off? We all know the deal: unfortunately, the changing of the seasons can affect our performance at work more than we may like to admit. And, with summer more than half way over, it might be time to rethink some of the bad habits you may have fallen into at the office. Check out these quick tips on how to stay on track at work during the summer:

  • Plan your time out accordingly -This should always be something we do, but unfortunately, is easier said than done. With all of the exciting events and activities that occur during the summer, it is easy to lose track of all of the many different things you have going on at work. However, you don’t want to miss out on anything fun because you let your assignments pile up. If you know you want to go to the beach over the weekend but you have an assignment due Monday, plan time earlier in the week to get the project done. If you lay out your schedule far enough in advance, there is no reason why you should have to miss out on some fun in the sun because of work.
  • Get some fresh air - We’ve all been there: there’s nothing worse than watching people enjoy a beautiful day while you’re stuck inside. You sit there, looking longingly out the window, thinking of all of the places you’d rather be than work. “Going stir crazy” is something that many people experience during the winter, but it can happen in the summer too. Schedule time in your day to get some fresh air, perhaps by eating lunch outside. By allowing yourself a few minutes of sun, you’ll be more focused and productive at work for the rest of the day.
  • Take time off  - You’ve worked hard all winter, now it’s time to be with your family and friends and get some much deserved R&R. Plan a trip somewhere or simply stay at home and enjoy the downtime. Take advantage of your weekends too, using them to recharge and spend time with your loved ones. Giving yourself a few days off will ensure that you are energized and ready to go when you get back to work.
  • Get some exercise – Yes, we’ve heard it all before, the benefits of exercise are innumerable, not only for your physical health, but for your emotional health and work performance as well. After being cooped up all winter and sitting inside an office all summer, it is important to get moving and get those endorphins flowing when you can. Exercising will make you more focused at work and will give you more energy throughout the day to accomplish everything you need to do. Take advantage of the longer days and go for a walk, run, whatever it may be—the important thing is that you get out there.
