Shooting Reported at Maplecrest Park in Maplewood

By DAVID LACKEY

August 19, 2013 at 6:19 PM

MAPLEWOOD, NJ –  An unidentified male fired several shots from a handgun in the direction of a group of people playing football in Maplecrest Park on Sunday at approximately 5 p.m. according to Police Chief Robert Cimino.

Several witnesses reported seeing a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and carrying what looked to be a handgun enter the park from Oakland Road.  He fired several shots toward the group, then fled the park and possibly entered a white vehicle, which left the scene driving north on Oakland Road.  Witnesses believed this was not a random act and that the individuals playing football were being targeted.

Maplewood Police found no suspects upon arriving at the scene, nor were there any injuries caused by the shooting.

The Maplewood Police Detective Bureau is investigating and asks that “anyone with knowledge of the identity of the individuals involved in the football game or having information that may assist in the investigation” contact Detective Sgt. Albert Sally or any member of the Detective Bureau at (973) 762-1234.
