MAPLEWOOD, NJ – The South Mountain YMCA’s Environmental Arts Summer Camp for grades K-3 is working to prevent “Summer Learning Loss” with it’s new 3-R pilot program, "Read, Retell and (w)Rite.”
It is well-documented that students who do not practice their reading skills over the summer take a step back in reading development.
Children at the camp are learning new vocabulary words through reading, then using cognitive maps to retell the story, and finally, writing a brief description about the story using the cognitive map.
In this program Children are learning at minimum six new level-2 vocabulary words per book. Nine books are read in each three-week session of camp, achieving one-third of the US Education Department suggested reading for the year.
Camp counselors report that the kids have been enjoying the process.
