FARMINGDALE, NJ (Nov. 10, 2020) – The pandemic can’t put the brakes on Girl Scout membership registration, typically hosted at elementary schools during the fall. Instead, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore is launching a drive-thru membership event on Sunday, Nov. 15 in Farmingdale and Toms River to make it easy for families to register on the spot.
Area girls and their families interested in Girl Scouting are invited to drive up and discover the many ways they can have fun and connect with others virtually or in-person through safe and engaging Girl Scout programs.
“We’re excited to try a new, convenient way to introduce local families to the benefits of Girl Scouts,” said Eileen Higgins, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore. “We offer girls from all backgrounds opportunities to thrive in our progressive leadership programs and adults the chance to mentor and lead girls through volunteering.”
The drive-thru event will take place rain or shine from 2-4 p.m. at Camp Sacajawea, 242 Adelphia Road, Farmingdale, and 10 a.m.-noon at the Girl Scouts Ocean Service Center, 1405 Freehold Road, Toms River.
Families must register in advance for the free, outdoor event. For everyone's safety, face coverings and social distancing are required.
Parents may relax in their cars while their daughters have fun making slime, shooting off mini rockets and exploring other STEM activities. Higgins noted that building skills and interest in science, technology, engineering, and math is part of a significant Girl Scout initiative to fill the STEM workforce pipeline.
Girl Scout programs also focus on the outdoors, life skills and entrepreneurship, she said, adding that nearly 10,000 girls participate in the Jersey Shore council. A mix of in-person and virtual programs are available so that girls can stay engaged with their troops and reach their goals, Higgins said.
The membership fee is $40, and as a nonprofit charity, Girl Scouts provides support to girls whose families may be experiencing financial difficulties.
Girls who register to become Girl Scouts by Nov. 15 will receive a $10 coupon redeemable at the Girl Scout online shop. All girls who participate in the drive-thru event will take home an activity kit and a special Girl Scout patch. For families who prefer no contact, the activities can be packaged to take home.
In keeping with the Girl Scout tradition of giving back to the community, families who attend the drive-thru event are asked to donate a nonperishable food item to support the Bradley Food Pantry.
