HOLMDEL, NJ - In a failed attempt to escape law enforcement after a motor vehicle accident Saturday, Lakewood resident Victor Torres-Santamaria tore through a portion of Holmdel Cemetery, destroying eight headstones.
A statement was released by the Holmdel Police Department:
"March 28, 2020 at 4:00 PM, the Holmdel Police Department was alerted to a motor vehicle collision at the Holmdel Cemetery, located at 900 Holmdel Road.
Upon the arrival of Officers, they located a disabled Ford work van inside the cemetery property. A further investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling north on Holmdel Road when it crossed the roadway and struck the embankment on the south side of the road. This caused the van to go airborne and it landed in the cemetery, causing damage to several head stones.
In an attempt to flee the scene, the driver drove over eight additional headstones, causing significant damage to the property.
The driver, Victor Torres-SantaMaria of Lakewood, was arrested for being an unlicensed driver, Criminal Mischief, Desecration of Venerated Objects, and Hindering Apprehension. Torres-SantaMaria was released pending a court date.
