Festival of Lanterns

‘Tis the Season to Celebrate: German Language School Students Host Free Cultural Event, Annual Festival of Lanterns

The German Language School (www.njlearnsgerman.org) will host two free community events to ring in the season of sharing and giving. Join students for the Festival of Lanterns on Thursday, November 7, 2019, from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Entry is free with a request for donations of non-perishable food for Calico Cat Food Pantry (RSVP - http://bit.ly/Lanternfestival).

What is the Lantern Festival?

This annual festival celebrates the work of St. Martin, a Roman soldier, who became a monk, and was made the patron saint of the poor in early Christianity. The story says St. Martin met a beggar on his way home one late evening and seeing him shivering roadside, tore his cloak in half and shared it with him. Today, the tradition is celebrated with young children making paper lanterns, singing songs to honor the saint, with lantern parades in the dusk throughout villages in many European countries. Families and local businesses hand out sweets and treats to the parading students.

All are welcome to make a lantern, and join the parade at the German Language School, located at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 112 Middletown Road, Holmdel (corner of Crawford’s Corner Everett Rd, Garden State Parkway Exit 114).
