Monmouth County Republican Chairman Shaun Golden said , "It was a great night for the Monmouth County Republican organization with strong turnout from all of our members. We thank all the candidates for participating and congratulate the winners. We will have a strong and historic ticket going into this year‘s election, which includes 6 women for county and state offices.
The overwhelming support for all of our winning candidates was clear. "

HOLMDEL, NJ - And then...just like that... the music stops.

After several successful elections to the Holmdel Township Committee, being elected on the Monmouth County Board of Commissioners and getting elected to the New Jersey State Assembly, Serena DiMaso was unceremoniously dumped by her own party by a large margin. In an unusual rebuke, all Holmdel Township Republicans also voted her out except DiMaso, who was able to vote for herself.

She still serves as Chairwoman of the Holmdel Planning Board and also logged 200 calls in 2020 as a Non-EMT driver for the Holmdel First Aid Squad.

The unofficial results:

Gerry Scharfenberger - 213, Vicky Flynn - 142, Serena DiMaso - 89

After losing, DiMaso lashed out in a Facebook post. "I'm disappointed with the alleged results and the manner in which the county committee in Monmouth County and LD13 were treated. There were significant flaws and irregularities in the way in which this election was conducted. I'll defer to my attorneys for additional comment." said DiMaso who is also an (non-practicing) attorney. She gave no details. Prior to the election, Monmouth County Republican Chairman Shaun Golden declared her to be unelectable.

One of the winners was Victoria Flynn, Esq. A working attorney who beat DiMaso, Flynn commented, “I am overwhelmed and humbled with the support I have received in this campaign. I would like to thank the entire Monmouth County Republican Committee for their endorsement tonight. I am excited to join our great Monmouth County Republican leaders - Senator Declan O’Scanlon and Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger - on the LD13 ticket this year. I look forward to a spirited campaign in 2021 and will work hard to earn every vote."

Flynn and Scharfenberger plan to meet all the folks who voted for them and those who didn't. Newcomer Flynn is a practicing attorney with a background in municipal and educational law. Holmdel Schools, where she serves as Board President, has been mentioned as the 'platinum standard' and a blueprint for reopening success.

Flynn ran for Township Committee in 2020 and lost by a small number of votes to current Holmdel Mayor Greg Buontempo. DiMaso backed Buontempo against Flynn.

Ironically, had DiMaso backed the county supported Flynn and helped her win a Holmdel Township Committee seat, she may have still been running with Scharfenberger. So, oddly enough, DiMaso may have run herself out of her own seat on the New Jersey State Assembly.

Scharfenberger and Flynn were endorsed by nearly every major Monmouth County elected official. DiMaso was endorsed by Monmouth County Commissioner Lillian Burry and Kim Guadagno, who ran a losing campaign against Phil Murphy for Governor. TAPinto reached out to Senator Declan O'Scanlon for comment but did not hear back by press time. He did not publicly back anyone during the process.

Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger shared his thoughts with TAPinto: "I am both humbled and gratified to have such tremendous support from the county committee of LD 13. I am looking forward to running on this strong ticket in November."
