KEANSBURG, NJ: On June 27th, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, the Bayshore Senior Center on Main Street in Keansburg, was transformed by Social Community Activities Network, (SCAN) into a fun, interactive and educational Brain Health Fair. The free event was open to the public and about 100 guests, mainly seniors from the surrounding bayshore towns, received valuable advice on brain health and overall wellness from interesting and informative speakers.
When guests entered they were able to visit the many booths that were set up from companies representing health and wellness, homecare, and various services and resources.
The fair featured two Keynote Speakers; both delivering valuable information. Hackensack Meridian Health's Dr. Kristine Keane, a leading neuropsychologist, public speaker and author, spoke to the guests about the Five Pillars of Brain Health: sleep, exercise, nutrition, social participation and cognitive activity.
Adrienne Bruker, Sports Nutritionist at CareOne King James spoke to the group about the Benefits of Nutrition & Hydration for your Brain Health. She provided insight about foods and herbs highlighting the health benefits and speaking about dementia and particular food ingrediants to keep the brain healthier. For example omega rich foods, dark chocolate and walnuts are all brain healthy foods. There were many surprising benefits to certain foods for example Bruker explained that celery, a food most of us think is mainly water, contains a plant compound called luteolin. Luteolin helps calm inflammation in the brain. Inflamation is the number one cause of neurodegeneration.
