SHORT HILLS, NJ - The first time I sold this home at 79 Minnisink Rd in 1991, I was 31 years old and the sale represented my introduction to the uber luxury real estate market. Although born and raised in Millburn/Short Hills, and a frequent guest at many prestigious township homes owned by the parents of my friends, I was a new Broker, and just beginning to understand the complexity of high-end construction and the historic districts in the community.

The original carriage house, designed by architect Arthur Nash, dates back to 1916. In what is now the dining room, the 12” pine ceiling beams and two horse stalls carved into the stone walls remain from the early days. According to the softcover book “Sticks, Shingles and Stones” outlining Stewart Hartshorn’s ideal community, the architecture from 1878 to 1937 was highlighted, this being a part of the estate at 71 Minnisink. Published by the Millburn/Short Hills Historical Society, an early photo from 1947, shows when this home was converted into a modest caretaker’s cottage, with interior stone walls, a hay loft upstairs, a one car garage and an open porch that still exists today.

Set back on park-like property, this home underwent many transformations as several owners enlarged and renovated. There were many interesting features and details, but the foundation was old and several areas required a lot of work. The basement was a tiny dungeon and walking up or down either of the rickety staircases, led to unimpressive and disconnected spaces with low ceilings.

Fast forward to 2007, when I was hired to resell the home that I had negotiated 16 years earlier. This time a premiere builder took over and spent ten years completely rebuilding from top to bottom, and also joining two completely separate second floors with a huge addition in the center of the house and a brand new 900 foot, stone garage. No expense was spared as materials were reclaimed from various out of state sources to maintain the integrity of the original structure.

The ultimate in privacy and state of the art technology, including vantage, sonos and everfocus, this residence exceeds every expectation in quality and detail. With a 340' long driveway, on beautifully landscaped grounds, this one-of-a-kind, expansive stone and shingle retreat, is nestled among some of the finest properties in town.  Over 8,000 sq foot has been custom-crafted from top to bottom and rebuilt as-new. Four floors of luxurious living space w/6-7 Bedrooms, 7 full and 2 half baths, slate roof, copper gutters, stone walls & 14 zones of central air & radiant heat provide warmth and comfort underneath various types of brick, wood and tile floors.

An in-town country estate w/ its own guest cottage that could be a perfect pool house, new 3 car garage, home gym, a stunning gourmet kitchen where 40+ guests are comfortable flowing in and out to a 70' lighted stone patio.
