MILLBURN, NJ – As America gets ready to celebrate Independence Day on July 4, no town will be showing more patriotic pride than Millburn.  An “Old-Fashioned 4th of July” will find activities all day long, organized by the Millburn-Short Hills 4th of July Committee.

In the morning, Taylor Park will be the site for the following:

9:30 a.m. – The Bike, Trike and Stroller Parade

10 a.m. – Girls All-Star Softball Game

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. - The afternoon program also at Taylor Park will feature Duck Races, Pony Rides, Face Painting, Amusement Rides and a Revolutionary War Encampment.

7 p.m. - The Evening Program will take place at Millburn High School.  There will be music by Krazy Kat DJ and Family Activities, followed by a Fireworks Spectacular at dusk (which will probably be at around 9 p.m.).

Admission tickets cost $10 in advance, or $12 on July 4.  For the fireworks only, tickets are $5.

The 2014 Patriot Award will be given to township resident Michael Weinstein, a seven-year survivor of pancreatic cancer.

“Since surviving a very risky surgery that cured him of this terrible disease, Michael has devoted his life toward raising awareness of Pancreatic Cancer and increasing the amount of research funding dedicated to developing early screening techniques and to hopefully find a cure,” said a statement by the 4th of July Committee.

Weinstein has established Pancreatic Cancer Awareness dates in numerous New Jersey municipalities, lobbied US Congressional officials to increase the overall share of cancer funding directed toward Pancreatic Cancer, and helped organize a very successful annual PANCAN fundraiser event in New Jersey.

Every year, the July Fourth Committee presents the Patriot Award to an individual (or a group) with strong leadership skills and is active in community service. Weinstein, like past award winners, will have his name added to a plaque on a boulder in Taylor Park.
