NEWARK, NJ - Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose, III have announced that authorities are investigating two separate shooting incidents that occurred in Newark on Saturday evening and early Sunday morning. The first incident occurred shortly before 6:00 pm on Saturday (9/22/18). Newark police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Avon Avenue on reports of shots fired. Arriving officers located two males suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to University Hospital. One of the victims, who has been identified as Elijah J. Roberts, age of 30 of Newark, was pronounced dead at 6:36 pm, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit. The second victim was treated for a non-life threatening injury.
The second incident occurred at approximately 2:45 am on Sunday. Newark police officers responded to the area of Pennsylvania Avenue and South Street on are a report of a shooting. Arriving officers located two males, both of whom were suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The males were transported to University Hospital, where one of the victims was pronounced dead at 5:32 am, according to Fennelly. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The second male has been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
Both incidents, which appear to be unrelated, are being investigated by the Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
