NEWARK, NJ - The Millburn baseball team swept a rare high school doubleheader on Friday against Newark East Side in regular season action that preceded the start of the state tournament on Monday.
Millburn defeated East Side by scores of 4-3 and 3-1. In the first game, Millburn rallied from a 3-0 deficit after three innings, breaking a 3-3 tie with a run in the sixth inning. Ben Sinins had an RBI triple and Ben Pampush an RBI single and Alex Byington picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief before Ben Chrzanowski escaped a jam in the seventh for the save.
In Game 2, Ryan Wenslau pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings to save the victory for Tyler Adelman (4 2/3 IP, 6 H, 1 ER). Peter Serruto doubled in two runs in the third inning and Chrzanowski singled in a run in the fifth.
Millburn (14-8) next will open play in the Section 2, Group 4 state tournament. The second-seeded Millers host 15th-seeded Bridgewater-Raritan on Monday with senior right-hander Kyle Mazer likely to be on the mound for the Millers.
