MILLBURN, NJ - Connor Lally pitched a one-hitter and won a high-profile pitching matchup as Millburn defeated Verona, 5-1, in baseball on Thursday.
Lally was matched up with one of the most highly regarded pitching prospects in New Jersey, Collin Kiernan, and Lally had a decidedly better day. Lally (3-0) struck out nine batters and walked two. The only run Verona (8-7) scored against him was unearned.
Kiernan, a senior right-hander with a 90 mph fastball, gave up two runs to Millburn (11-2) in the bottom of the first and another in the second to fall behind, 3-1. Millburn reached him for seven hits and three walks. He struck out six. Only two of Millburn's runs were earned.
Ben Pampush went 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored for the Millers. Lally helped his own cause with an RBI single, and Peter Serruto and Peter Gula each had RBI singles in the victory.
