MILLBURN, NJ - West Orange boys soccer coach Doug Nevins is closing in on a career milestone, and on Monday, the Mountaineers made a statement to help bring their coach closer to that round number.

West Orange defeated previously unbeaten Millburn, 2-0, in the rain to give Nevins his 299th career victory in his 19th season as a head coach.

Senior midfielder Brian Merlos scored off a feed from Kalleo Mendes with 21 minutes left in the first half to give the Mountaineers (3-1) a 1-0 lead.  Millburn's back line then held its ground over the next 40 minutes before senior Tyreek Wray converted a feed from Mendes into a goal that extended the West Orange lead to 2-0.

Millburn actually ended up getting more shot opportunities despite being outscored. AJ Petrucci of West Orange made 12 saves. Zack Butter had five saves for Millburn (3-1).

When the two teams met in the regular season last year, Millburn prevailed by a 2-0 score. Both the Mountaineers and the Millers figure to contend deep into the Essex County Tournament in October and in the state tournament in November.

Nevins will have a chance to get win No. 300 when West Orange plays its next game, Friday at Livingston. Millburn's next game is Friday at Montclair.
