Charity Golf Outing Raises $31,000 Toward Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Fund

LIVINGSTON, NJ — Livingston UNICO presented a $31,000 check, the proceeds of the first-annual Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Fund Charity Golf Tournament, to the Tevlin family at Livingston UNICO’s monthly dinner meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

According to Livingston UNICO President Kevin Francione, the all-day golf tournament at Cedar Hill Golf and Country Club raised an additional $7,000 during the 30 days between the intended date in September and the rain date. Francione, a longtime Livingston resident, said he had never seen the people of Livingston be as generous as they were toward this cause.

The funds raised will help redevelop and renew the main athletic field at Seton Hall Preparatory School (SHP) in honor of the 19-year-old SHP alum who tragically lost his life in June of 2014.

“The event was just absolutely special,” said Francione, who also thanked the Tevlin family for allowing Livingston UNICO to honor their son. “The donations never stopped coming. Livingston united as a community and I couldn’t be more proud of it.”

Matthew Cannizzo, Director of Institutional Advancement at SHP, welcomed Brendan’s mother, Allison, his grandparents on both sides, aunts, uncles and other family members who attended the UNICO dinner meeting. Echoing Francione, Cannizzo thanked PBA officers Andrew Ullman and Ron Barbella, who were instrumental in bringing the golf outing to life, and Joyce Mazzarella and Andrea Ubaldi, who solicited more than 100 local businesses to donate to the cause.

“Someday kids who aren’t even born yet will ask 20, 30, 40 years from now, ‘Who was Brendan Tevlin? Why is the field named after him?’ and they’ll be able to read about who Brendan was and learn how he impacted people,” said Cannizzo. “I am completely amazed at how Brendan has brought communities together. I can’t imagine having that kind of an impact on people at the age of 19—it’s mind boggling.”

Reading a letter written by Brendan’s aunt on behalf of the entire Tevlin and McNulty family, Cannizzo said Allison and Mike Tevlin decided redeveloping the field at SHP would be the best way to represent Brendan after his passing. According to the family, Brendan embodied the sense of community and camaraderie that he felt during his four years at SHP as well as UNICO’s motto “Service Above Self.”

According to the letter, it was befitting that Livingston UNICO decided to raise funds to help the project at SHP through a charity golf outing.

“As with every event that has touched our lives, the golf event was well attended, well run, and supported by people who have been touched by the tragedy and wanted to help,” the letter read. “The day was an amazing group effort brought together to celebrate Brendan’s life. We’re honored that you chose to help keep Brendan’s spirit alive and we are humbled by your generous support of our project at Seton Hall.”

Ubaldi described the golf outing as a “magical day” full of remembrance and celebration. Tevlin’s spirit was kept alive through a sport he loved, cocktails among loved ones and a special performance from fellow bagpiper and close friend Conor Gardner.

“I always feel honored to play the bagpipes in tribute to Brendan,” said Gardner. “The golf outing was the best one I have ever been a part of as far as the number of participants, the speeches and how great of a job UNICO did.”

On Nov. 27 at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, the Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Fund will host its second-annual “Concert for Brendan,” remembering and honoring the teenager’s life. Like the golf outing, all proceeds will go toward the Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Field at SHP.
