CHATHAM, NJ - A 14-year-old Chatham student was struck by a backhoe while walking on the sidewalk toward the Chatham Middle School on the morning of Tuesday, June 12, according to a report issued by the Chatham Borough Police Department.

The student was taken to Morristown Medical Center for a precautionary evaluation.

Chatham police responded to the call that came in at 7:36 a.m., reporting that a pedestrian had been struck. According to the report prepared by Chatham Borough Police Captain Brian Gibbons, "The juvenile was located at the entrance to Chatham Middle School and was transported to Morristown Medical Center for precautionary evaluation. The middle school principal and juvenile’s parents were immediately notified. As a consequence of the investigation, Boothby was issued a summons for Careless Driving (39:4-97)."

Chatham police reported that the "juvenile walking to school, did not fall down, lose consciousness or complain of injury as a result of the collision and continued to walk to school. Boothby, who immediately contacted police via 911, explained that he did not see the pedestrian on the sidewalk and only noticed the victim when he began to make the turn, stopping as soon contact was made."
