Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, Short Hills has a long-standing tradition of remembering the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Erev Shabbat Service celebrated on the weekend designated with a national holiday.  In the spirit of his Civil Rights work to bring the diverse groups of our nation together, a speaker of another faith is invited to TBJ to address the congregation.

On Friday, January 12th at 5:30 pm, this year’s speaker is Rev. Charles F. Boyer.  Rev. Boyer will discuss racial injustices in our state, focusing on the fact that there are a disproportionate number of young black men in our penal institutions and our role to help advocate for change in this system and our society.

The Reverend Charles Franklin Boyer is a third-generation African Methodist Episcopal pastor and holds a Master’s of Divinity from Payne Theological Seminary and an MBA from Franklin University.  He is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Ministry with a focus on Liberation Theology and Prisoner Medical Rights Advocacy.

Rev. Boyer is the founder of Salvation and Social Justice, a New Jersey based coalition of clergy and civil rights organizations which seek to fight structural and institutional racism through policy, advocacy, education and reform.  Their mission statement:  We work to bring accountability, reform and transformation to institutional bias that harms the most vulnerable.  From this vantage point, we have come to recognize the need for fundamental change to many of New Jersey’s institutions.  We coordinate with various religious and civil rights organizations in New Jersey to make it a more just and fair state for all!

Rev. Boyer is currently leading a campaign in New Jersey to require racial impact statement legislation to counter racial disparities in New Jersey criminal justice laws and practices.

Members of the community are invited to hear this dynamic speaker on Friday, January 12 at 5:30 pm.
