NEWARK, NJ - Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino  and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating the death of an 8 year old girl in Newark earlier today. Shortly after 1:30 p.m., Newark Police and EMS were dispatched to an apartment in the 1000 block of South Orange Avenue on a report of an unresponsive child. The child was taken to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 2:16 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly.

This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. The cause and manner of death will be determined by an autopsy performed by the NJ Regional Medical Examiner's Office, according to Fennelly.  The investigation is ongoing at this time.
