SHORT HILLS, NJ -  Interweave Board and faculty member Dr. Betty Livingston Adams is a winner of the prestigious Wilbur Award for 2017. This award, presented by the Religion Communicators Council, honors excellence by individuals in secular media – print and online journalism, book publishing, broadcasting, and motion pictures – in communicating religious issues, values and themes.

Interweave is an interfaith, interspiritual learning center focused on integrated spirituality for daily living.

Adams is Research Fellow and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of History at Rutgers. "Black Women’s Christian Activism: Seeking Social Justice in a Northern Suburb" was winner in the non-fiction book category. The book details the lives of ordinary African American women who made extraordinary contributions, a powerful local story with national implications.

Two of the women featured played important roles in the founding of Summit’s Fountain Baptist Church and Wallace Chapel, and the book profiles their journey from personal spiritual formation to community activism.

"Black Women’s Christian Activism: Seeking Social Justice in a Northern Suburb" has generated discussions in churches, synagogues, historical societies, and other non-profit organizations, and book clubs have added it to their reading lists. It was selected as Interweave’s Book of the Year in 2016.
