SUMMIT, NJ - A cargo van crashed on the Summit Municipal Golf Course grounds today, winding up dangling over a drainage stream, resulting in the driver being transported to Morristown Medical Center.

The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m., and the Summit Fire Department, Summit Police Department, and the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad all responded to the scene. Upon their arrival, the driver was still in the vehicle.

City employee and course groundskeeper Tom Gerrity stayed with vehicle's driver until help arrived.

The Summit Fire Department stabilized the vehicle and removed the driver via the van's cargo door.

The driver has been identified as a male, in his late 70's, and is not a resident of Summit. While the exact circumstances of how the van would up in the drainage stream are not fully known, the driver -- who was the sole occupant in the vehicle -- reportedly told first responders that he had stopped in the parking lot for break and claimed he awoke to the van driving into the culvert that runs from the pond to the Passaic River.

The condition of the van's driver is unknown at this time.
