Experts Come Together to Discuss Tackling Cyberbullying


MONTCLAIR, NJ - With the increased usage of technology nationwide, school and law enforcement officials have seen an increase in cyberbullying.

The League of Women Voters of the Montclair Area Education Fund will bring together experts in the field to host a community discussion on the growing epidemic.

The program entitled "Cyberbullying - The Great Fear" on Thursday, May, 18 from 7:30-9:00p.m., will take place in the Assembly Room of the Union Congregational Church, 176 Cooper Avenue, Upper Montclair.

Cyberbullying has become a powerful tool that is used to bully and control individuals. Organizers describe it as a faceless demon that has affected many people emotionally and physically. The panel of experts will attempt to address and connect the dots to this worldwide threat.

PANELISTS are as follows: 

  • Montclair Police Chief Todd Conforti, along with a cyber crime detective
  • Montclair 4th Ward Councilor and Pediatrician, Dr. Renee E. Baskerville
  • Andrew Evangelista, District Mental Health/Anti-Bullying Coordinator, Montclair Board of Education 
  • Representative from The Partnership for Children of Essex, a program that coordinates mental health and other services for families.

ACTIVITY: Open-ended and interactive scenarios presented by The New Jersey Mental Health Players.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The New Jersey Mental Health Players, an initiative of the Mental Health Association of New Jersey, is a highly successful, interactive community education program which has been in existence since 1980. 

Two open-ended scenarios involving the emotional effects of cyberbullying and of existing in a culture of intolerance will be presented as part of the program.The role-plays will be enacted by several adult Players as well as three teen Players who are seniors at Montclair High School.  Audience interaction will be a key component for this segment of the evening’s agenda.


There will be a Q and A period following the forum.
