MILLBURN, NJ - The Millburn Fire Department is alerting residents to an upcoming event to dispose of common household hazardous waste items, including fire extinguishers, motor oil, and car batteries. The Essex County Utilities Authority's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be held on Saturday, May 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 125 Fairview Avenue (next to Old Hospital Center) in Cedar Grove.
"We frequently get calls asking how to dispose of fire extinguishers, gasoline, and other materials that should not be thrown away with regular household garbage," said Millburn Fire Chief Robert Echavarria. "We encourage residents to take advantage of this upcoming event to safely and responsibly dispose of hazardous waste."
Materials that can be disposed of at the event include pesticides and herbicides; gasoline, oil, and other automotive fluids; various types of paints, paint thinners and solvents; and swimming pool chemicals. A full list of acceptable and unacceptable materials can be found at the Utility Authority's website, at www.ecuanj.org. Information about waste collection and recycling centers throughout the county is also available on the site.
"Improper disposal of hazardous waste can pose a serious threat to people, animals, and the environment," said Chief Echavarria. "For example, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that just one quart of motor oil can pollute and contaminate one million gallons of freshwater. Don't allow hazardous materials to pile up in your basement and garage. This event is a great opportunity to safely discard them."
Residents are also reminded that Millburn Township maintains an "E-cycling" program, which is available every day at the Department of Public Works Town Yard on Essex Street. Acceptable items include computers, televisions, telecom equipment, and mobile phones. More information is available on the Township's website, at www.twp.millburn.nj.us.
