MILLBURN, NJ - A two-win team taking to the road to face an undefeated powerhouse is a daunting task, but that's what the Millburn football team will be up against in the first round of the Section 2, Group 4 playoffs when the Millers cross the state to visit Phillipsburg Friday night.
Game time is 7 p.m., and temperatures by that time might be below freezing.
Although Millburn is 2-6, it has actually been a season of significant improvement for coach Chris Drechsel's team, which won just one game last season. Millburn has been competitive in more games this season and has held its own against some solid competition.
But Phillipsburg (8-0) has taken down all comers, including strong opponents like Bridgewater-Raritan, Hillsborough and North Hunterdon, and beaten them decisively.
Millburn does have a quarterback and two receivers who have a state championship in their possession: senior QB Peter Serruto and receivers Ben Pampush and Sam Gladson were all members of the Millburn Group 4 state championship baseball team last spring. Serruto, a catcher headed to Rutgers to play baseball, has completed 57 percent of his passes for 1,130 yards and seven TDs. He also has rushed for four TDs.
Pampush is Millburn's leading receiver with 30 catches, 16.8 yards per catch and four TDs. Gladson has 13 catches for a 12.4-ypc average. Thomas Quinn has caught 19 passes for 9.5 yards out of the backfield.
Running back Patrick Fitzsimmons has gained 347 yards on the ground for a 5.1-yard average with three TDs.
