Amanda Cruz Credits: Essex County Prosecutor's Office

SHORT HILLS, NJ – Former U.S. Postal worker Amanda Cruz, 22, of Newark was arrested and charged today with first-degree narcotics violations. She was working as a mail carrier at the Short Hills Post Office across from the train station on Chatham Rd.

According to a press release from the Essex County Prosecutor’s office this morning, it alleges that Cruz entered into an agreement and made arrangements to have delivered kilograms of cocaine to the United States from Puerto Rico. She allegedly provided to her accomplices the addresses of Short Hills residents she believed were on vacation.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray commended the Millburn Police Department and the U.S. Postal Service for their outstanding work in investigating the case.

“We worked in good cooperation with the U.S. Postal Service, it’s a good partnership”, said Millburn Police Captain Michael Mulligan. “ The (Essex County) Prosecutor’s Office is the lead in this investigation and it’s still on-going.”

It’s unknown at this time how long Cruz was employed at the Short Hills station or what neighborhoods in Short Hills she serviced. The supervisor of the postal station only commented, “She does not work here at this time.”

These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
