NEWARK, NJ - Acting Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today Luis Mangual was found guilty by an Essex County Jury. The defendant was convicted of Murder, Unlawful Possession of a Handgun and Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose. Assistant Prosecutor Carlo Fioranelli tried the case before the Honorable Verna G. Leath, J.S.C.
Jury deliberation began this morning and the Jury returned the verdict after an hour of deliberation.
This incident occurred on December 28, 2013 when the victim, Jose Alfaro was shot by the defendant on Mt. Prospect Ave in Newark. The victim was in front of his home when shot by Mangual.

The defendant is facing life in prison as a result of the verdict. He will be sentenced by Judge Leath in the near future.
