SHORT HILLS, NJ - Hartshorn Elementary introduced a new initiative to help students collaborate and identify ways to serve the community. Change Agents contacted a number of city and state officials to highlight Officer Appreciation Day, that took place on May 17.

Several students, identified for their character and kindness, were selected to become members of “Change Agents.” Change Agents is an initiative where students work together to make a visible difference in the world through Environmental Awareness, Ethics in Action, Community Service, and Random Acts of Kindness.

One initiative we developed is Officer Appreciation Day, May 17th.
We thought Officers should be honored.

1. If there were no police, people would break laws, so we need to show our appreciation.
2. Police protect and keep children safe in our schools, our community, our country and all over the world.
3. They are helpers so we should say, “Thank you.”
4. Having Officer Appreciation Day is a way to show respect for our officers.
5. Officers have a hard job. They are brave and do what others may not be able to do or may not want to do.
6. Officers are special, so they should have a special day.

We listed the reasons and met with our district superintendent and her administrative panel to request that all schools in Millburn recognize Officer Appreciation Day.  On May 17th the Millburn community recognized Officer Appreciation Day. Police officers were given thank you notes and cards, they had food delivered to their headquarters, police visited the schools, and the high school marquee displayed “Officer Appreciation Day May 17 - Thank You.”

It is our hope that all communities will have the opportunity to show appreciation for those who risk their lives every day to serve and protect. Consistent with our mission of the Change Agents it is also our hope that this small act will make a big difference. We hope that you will impress upon every school and every citizen that they recognize Officer Appreciation Day on May 17 in 2019 and every year after. Thank you so very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

The Change Agents
