LIVINGSTON, NJ — Members of the Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) family have raised more than $40,000 for the Heart Center at SBMC through their fourth annual indoor cycling fundraiser Cycle Red for Heart Disease, held in Livingston for the first time this year at the recently opened CycleBar on Sunday afternoon.

The event was hosted by SBMC anesthesiologist Dr. Joel Braverman from the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), family members Janet, Elle and Amanda Braverman, SBMC Administrative Director of Community Health and Outreach Margie Heller and Dr. Alan Garten.

“We’ve had a great turn out [this year],” said Heller. “We have about 150 people spinning and we have great sponsors and wonderful support from staff and physicians at SBMC. We’re thrilled the [CycleBar owners] Charlotte and Delvin Burton have been wonderful and very supportive and we’re happy to host it here in Livingston, where the hospital is.”

Braverman, who lost his 46-year-old father to heart disease, and Heller, who lost her 54-year-old brother to heart disease, explained that they were both motivated to turn their bad personal experiences into something that would raise awareness and that could benefit others. Heller said this event the event was a way for her to keep her brother’s memory alive while also promoting the importance of exercise in staying heart healthy.

This year, Heller said the event held extra significance to her because she also recently lost her father, Daniel Weiss, to heart disease.

“He co-chaired this event with us and became a champion of this cause, so today this event is in his memory,” said Heller. “I ask that you ride for your heart health.”

Heller added that she was excited to be able to move the event to Livingston this year after hosting it at Flywheel in Millburn over the past few years.

“I’m so excited that Margie Heller is very much a leader in bringing this event from year to year that focuses on raising funds for heart disease, which is so important for us at Saint Barnabas Medical Center as well as with what we do at the American Heart Association,” said Stephen Zieniewicz, FACHE, president and chief executive officer at SBMC.

Heller and her co-chairs thanked participants for being heart healthy and supporting this cause, which they said “we will all be dealing with at some point with family or friends.” They also thanked the owners and staff at CycleBar Livingston, SBMC Project Coordinator Meghan Ryan for her hard work in making this event a success, and the following sponsors:
