MILLBURN, NJ - The Millburn Short Hills Desi Club is set to welcome the community to their 70th Indian Independence Celebration on Sunday, August 13 at the the Bauer Community Center. The celebration which includes refreshments, cultural programs and a flag ceremony kicks off at 10:00 am.
Indian Independence Day is observed on August 15 to commemorate the nation's independence from the United Kingdom with the passage of the Indian Independence Act 1947. India kept King George VI as head of state until its transition to full republican constitution.
India attained independence following the Independence Movement noted for largely nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress (INC). On August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India that day, raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. On Independence Day, the prime minister customarily raises the flag to commemorate the day.
