Junior League Organizes March Volunteer Madness

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ - The Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills (JLOSH) has organized a day of mass volunteering on Saturday, March 2, to celebrate the group's 100 years of community service.

More than 100 volunteers will join forces with 13 community groups that have historical ties to JLOSH. Projects include packing food bags for hungry children and assisting at a soup kitchen, stocking book pantries and school supply closets, clearing debris at an arboretum, renovating rooms at group foster homes and a family refuge, and sorting eyeglasses for the needy.

Project details from JLOSH:

Millburn & Short Hills -  9.30am

Cora Hartshorn Arboretum, 324 Forest Drive South, Short Hills, NJ, 07078

As a result of Hurricane Sandy, the Arboretum lost many trees and branches. Volunteers will remove branches from pathways and spread mulch.  Children will transplant tree seedlings from flatbeds to individual pots.

Maplewood & South Orange - 9.30am

FAMILYConnections; Reunity House, 122 Irvington Avenue, South Orange, NJ07079

Volunteers will sort gently used clothing and stock a newly purchased wardrobe at the Reunity House. FAMILYConnections has three Reunity Houses – homes established to provide a safe environment in which families separated due to abuse and neglect can work towards being reconnected.  In addition to providing therapeutic care, FAMILYConnections will often provide clothing to the children of these families.

West Orange - 10am

Valley Settlement House, 33-41 Tompkins Street, West Orange, NJ 07052

Volunteers will help organize the children’s library and the school supply storage closet.  Valley Settlement House is a nonprofit social service agency that promotes and affords opportunities for the family and each of its members to find and develop their potential for a positive life in the home, neighborhood and community.  Their service area includes but is not limited to the Oranges, Maplewood, Newark and Irvington.

East Orange - 10am

Family Intervention Services, 86 South Harrison Street, East Orange, NJ 07018

Volunteers will transform three austere family treatment rooms into more “family friendly” treatment rooms.  With the help of storage, shelving, chalkboard paint, children’s artwork, games and puzzles, these rooms will take on a whole new look. Family Intervention Services is a nonprofit organization committed to providing the assistance and support that are necessary to build strong, healthy families throughout all communities.  Through crisis intervention, therapeutic counseling, case management, and education, FIS supports the families in its community.
