MILLBURN, NJ - Marathon runners spend countless hours logging miles, athletes practice skills over and over to achieve optimal performance and training the brain for the rigors of academic, career and cognitive success requires the same dedication and the right trainers. LearningRx Short Hills specializes in cognitive brain training to help clients from early elementary age through seniors and even tackle recovery from Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) to age-related memory loss. Brain training is more than skills for academic success; it is a tool for life. Just as top athletes seek out the best coaches, LearningRx Short Hills has a highly trained staff of clinicians and trainers who themselves have completed brain training regimes and now share their expertise with clients.

The LearningRx Short Hills is owned and operated by Millburn resident Cindy Zhou since buying the business nearly three years ago. Just don't mistake LearningRx for tutoring services; Zhou explains "Brain training builds up a person's underlying cognitive skills, to increase their capacity to learn." Using the science of neuroplasticity and the brain's ability to recruit and build new or tap into unused neural connections to process new information. These connections are adaptable and available at any age to restore and enhance functioning.

The bright and airy training room overlooks Taylor Park and is intentionally fraught with potentials for distraction. This is all carefully planned out as one element of the brain training program, where clients learn to shut out external, non-essential information and focus on the task at hand. Training table are all open, and with multiple sessions happening concurrently, the environment mimics both academic and dynamic professional environments. After a through cognitive skills profile, LearningRx concentrates on the identified weak skills areas and do targeted intense training in individualized programs that run 12 weeks and up.

The LearningRx training concentrates on a learning model utilizing the Cattell-Horn-Carroll theory of intelligence that breaks down thinking into seven board ability categories: comprehension knowledge long-term retrieval, visual-spatial thinking, auditory processing, fluid reasoning, processing speed and short-term memory. These areas are further broken down into the automatic processing area and the higher thinking area of how the brain understands and stores information. Using one-on-one training sessions with clinicians or cognitive trainers, Learning RX uses game-like tasks that emphasize visual or auditory processing during the intense periods from 60-90 minutes each.

Across the LearningRx Programs, the majority of clients are school aged children looking to enhance academic potential especially in a high-performing district like Millburn, but LearningRx is much more than a resource for parents looking to help their young students. Community seniors and clients recovering from TBI are also using LearningRx to enhance their lives.

Utilizing the full compliment of the LearningRx programs, ThinkRx, ReadRx, MathRx and ComprehendRx, the increase in cognitive skills for clients with TBI across the enterprise from 2010-2015 showed promising results. Among 273 clients, the pre and post changes in the Woodcock-Johnson III - Test of Cognitive Abilities showed a 10 point increase in IQ scores from 92 to 102 and the average age equivalent gain was 3.7 years for cognitive skills. By using LearningRx brain training, recovery and increase in long-term memory and auditory processing areas showed the most dramatic score increase with an average of 18 points and 15 points gained respectively.

In a feasibility study with soldiers who suffered TBI utilizing the traditional LearningRx one-on-one training followed with computer-based cognitive training, the participants had statistically significant gains in short-term memory, associative memory, executive processing, auditory processing and fluid reasoning. This equated to improved memory, attention and organization and the restoration of cognitive function to statistically normal levels.

The results among senior clients of the LearningRx program are equally impressive. The average pre-test IQ score across the 262 clients was 95, and the post-training score jumped to 114. This 19 point average increase was the highest gain among the top improving skills categories. Long-term memory came in second with an average increase of 15 in scoring results. LearningRx is proving that brain training can enhance abilities at any age.

One of the largest demographics using LearningRx brain training is clients with a prior diagnosis of ADHD/ADD. Between 2010 and 2015 LearningRx followed the progress of 5,416 clients with an average age of 12.3 years. With programs working on general attention skills and the sub-set skills of sustained, selective and divided attention saw the use of precision targeting of skills to realize a 3.7 year age equivalent gain in cognitive skills performance and a 14 point gain in IQ scores. A local college student sought assistance at LearningRx in Short Hills after his ADHD combined with the new rigors of college life left him frustrated and performing lower than expectations academically. With a semester off, he worked with a LearningRx trainer and now finds himself able to effectively focus, read and retain the course material and considers himself, "undeniable proof that it works."

Across all age ranges LearningRx serves starting at age five, the IQ score increases were statistically significant. The mean gains ranged from 13 point increases to 21 points. The 21 point gain was seen seniors with the over 60 age group leading the way and the 50-59-year olds close behind with an 18 point jump. The pre-college 16 and 17-year-olds saw a 17 point increase of the 17,998 client pool across all programs.

LearningRx was founded in 1985 by Dr. Ken Gibson and now has over 80 training centers across the United States and are also available in 20 countries around the world. LearningRx in Short Hills is located at 150 Main Street in Millburn on the second floor. More information is available at or by calling 973.376.4646.
