MILLBURN, NJ - An a capella extravaganza is coming to Millburn High School with a visit from The Yale Whiffenpoofs and The Yale Spizzwinks(?). Millburn High School alums Max Sauberman (class of 2013) and Jake Gluckman (class of 2016) are members of these storied a capella groups.
The Yale Whiffenpoofs is the oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group in the world was founded in 1909. Every year, 14 Yale men are selected to be in the group, and they tour across the country and the world, performing over 250 concerts and culminating in a 90-day world tour that spans over 20 countries from Europe to Australia.
Travel and lodging are entirely self-funded by revenue from concerts and CD sales (not by Yale), and the singers themselves don’t pay anything. Most members take an academic leave of absence and devote their “Whiff Year” entirely to travel and performance, returning to Yale the following year to complete their education.
The group has become one of Yale University’s most celebrated traditions, performing for notable audiences including Ronald Reagan, George Bush I and II, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Mother Teresa, and the Dalai Lama. The group has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center, and for events such as The World Series, Saturday Night Live, Glee, The West Wing, and NBC’s The Sing Off.
The Yale Spizzwinks(?), America’s first and oldest underclassman a cappella group, founded in 1914. The Spizzwinks(?) tour the world visiting all six inhabited continents every three years and perform over 100 concerts each year, singing repertoire ranging from pop/rock to musical theater to country to jazz standards. They are also a 14 member all-male group and are known for their generous dose of choreography and unique brand of humor.
The opening act will be Millburn High School’s student a cappella group, Soulfege A Cappella. They are coming off a winning performance at the quarterfinals of the International Championship of High School A Cappella.
The concert is Friday, February 10 at 7:30 pm at the Millburn High School Auditorium at 462 Millburn Avenue.
