MILLBURN, NJ - The baseball semifinals of the Greater Newark Tournament that were scheduled for Saturday have been postponed until Monday.
Top-seeded Millburn (18-2) is scheduled to meet fourth-seeded Columbia at 7 p.m. in Belleville Monday night as the nightcap of a GNT semifinal doubleheader. Second-seeded Seton Hall Prep will take on sixth-seeded Montclair in the other semifinal at 3 p.m. in Belleville. However, because Belleville's diamond has a history of drainage issues, even a reschedule date of Monday might have to be pushed back to later next week.
Right now, Millburn's schedule beyond Monday's GNT game shows the Millers at home on Tuesday and Wednesday for key regular-season conference games against Nutley and Seton Hall Prep, respectively. It is possible that the Millers could face Seton Hall Prep twice in four days--first in the regular-season game Wednesday, and then again in the GNT championship game next Saturday if the two top seeds advance past the semifinals.
Millburn has faced its semifinal opponent, Columbia, twice during the regular season and coach Brian Chapman's team has beaten the Cougars, 9-0, in both meetings.
Millburn has a team batting average of .345, led by center fielder Richie Schiekofer, the lefty swinging University of Maryland commit batting .509 with 11 extra-base hits and 26 RBI. Schiekofer has 101 career hits. Second baseman Ben Pampush is batting .485 with 25 runs scored and catcher Peter Serruto, a junior committed to Rutgers, is batting .442 and has caught half of the 12 runners attempting to steal against him.
Although Millburn's pitching staff took a hit when junior ace Kyle Mazer went down with a season-ending knee injury a few weeks ago after compiling a 4-0 record with a 0.47 ERA, the Miller pitchers have soldiered on undaunted. The staff ERA is a glistening 1.51. Senior righty Connor Lally (4-0, 1.03) is likely to get the call in the semifinals.
