MILLBURN NJ- After a rough start to the season, the Millburn boys varsity Lacrosse team is crawling back with two consecutive victories over Cranford and A.L Johnston. After a thrashing 13-6 victory over A.L Johnson High School on Friday, the Millers look to keep their momentum and continue their success into the NJSIAA playoff tournament in May. The Millers currently hold a 3-7 record.

Seniors Gabe Greenberg and Ross Florin have helped catapult the Millers to success as of late. The senior duo combined for six goals and two assists on Friday. Another notable Miller who has helped propel the team to victory is sophomore goalie, Wesley Moshier. Moshier has 85 saves on the year, 13 of which came on Friday.

This is certainly a transitional year for the Millers. The Millburn LAX squad has seen a change in leadership from last year’s semi-final playoff squad. Coach Bill McCutcheon has replaced his son as the head coach of the team. McCutcheon heavily emphasizes hard work, passion, and leadership as tenets for the team. Coach McCutcheon has no assistant coaches but utilizes his three senior captains: Drew Smith, Gabe Greenberg, and Rocco Caivano to connect with his players.

Junior defenseman, Jack Bowen noted the changes Coach McCutcheon has brought to the locker room this season.

"Coach has emphasized passion and leadership in the locker room. It’s tough not having any assistant coaches, but the captains assist coach on all facets including team building and organization. Though we started off slowly, coach keeps pushing us to find success,” Bowen said.

Despite recent victories, the Millers still have room for improvement. After a 6-4 victory over Caldwell High School to open the year, the team has struggled. The Millers were defeated in the annual Jake Cup game to their local rival, Livingston; an occurrence that never occurred under former coach, Bill McCutheon Jr. Another defeat came when the Millers dropped a "must-win" game to Montclair Kimberley Academy by a score of 5-8.

The Millers’ most recent success points to the fact that these early losses may be fueling the team’s resurgence. In their two most recent victories, the Millburn LAX crew has outscored its opponents 19-10.

The Millers hope to extend their winning streak as they head into two very important impending matchups. The team will travel to St. Peters High School on April 30 in what should be a close and competitive rivalry matchup. Then the boys will come hope to play against the heavily favored Seton Hall Prep lacrosse squad on May 1.
