TRENTON, NJ – Millburn resident Thomas P. McCarrick, MD, MBI, Chief Medical Officer and Chief Medical Informatics Officer, Vanguard Medical Group, was recognized as the 2017 New Jersey Family Physician of the Year by the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians (NJAFP).
Each year, this award is presented to one outstanding physician in the state who best exemplifies the tradition of the family physician by providing the community with compassionate, comprehensive and caring medical service on a continuing basis. The recipient is directly and effectively involved in community affairs and activities that enhance the quality of life within their community, emulating the family physician as a healer and human being. In addition, the Family Physician of the Year is a role model for professionalism in the service and art of medicine to colleagues, other health professionals, the community and especially to young physicians in training and to medical students. Dr. McCarrick meets all of these criteria and more.
A board-certified family physician with an Added Qualification certification in geriatric medicine, Dr. McCarrick has practiced medicine and advocated for family physicians in New Jersey for more than 30 years. He chose a career in family medicine after being inspired by the physician who cared for his entire family when he was growing up.

“I enjoy the challenge of helping patients with whatever problems they bring to me,” Dr. McCarrick says of working in Family Medicine.  “At the same time, I enjoy the creative challenge of improving our systems of care, especially for those in the greatest need, and leveraging new ideas and technology to develop solutions.”
Recognized for continually striving for excellence and improving the health of the patients in his community, Dr. McCarrick is credited with always providing the most up-to-date, evidence-based, patient-centered care, in an empathetic and compassionate manner. His tireless advocacy for and involvement in improving the care of patients with special needs led Dr. McCarrick to start Care at Home New Jersey, a nonprofit organization that provides medical care to the isolated elderly with visits by nurse practitioners and social workers, a website database of home services, and monthly support groups for caregivers.
Additionally, Dr. McCarrick serves as a clinical instructor at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and school physician for Cedar Grove Public Schools. He has previously served as on the Board of Trustees at Mountainside Hospital and was Chairman of Ambulatory Care Committee.
As the 2017 New Jersey Family Physician of the Year, Dr. McCarrick will become the NJAFP’s nominee for the 2018 National Family Physician of the Year, presented by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. McCarrick is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, American Geriatrics Society and American Medical Informatics Association. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and attended New York University Medical School. He completed an internship and residency in family practice at Mountainside Hospital, and recently earned a Master of Biomedical Informatics (MBI) degree from Oregon Health Science University.
