Millburn Fire Department Advises on Emergency Preparedness.

MILLBURN, NJ - As hurricane season approaches, the Millburn Fire Department is advising local residents to plan ahead and be prepared in the event of an emergency or disaster.

“Disaster can strike without warning, and being prepared can help families greatly reduce the dangers or distress they may face,” said Millburn Fire Department Battalion Chief Edward Wade.

Emergency preparedness begins with a basic emergency plan.  Residents are advised to discuss ahead of time what they would do in an emergency situation.  This includes choosing a place where family can meet in case they become separated by a disaster; knowing how to shut off water, gas, and electricity to the home; and maintaining adequate insurance.

“Planning ahead also includes preparing a disaster supply kit,” said Chief Wade.  “This should include fresh water and enough canned and boxed foods to last each family member at least three days.  Other essential items include battery-powered flashlights and a battery-powered radio along with extra batteries, and an adapter to charge mobile phones in a vehicle.  Having a supply kit on hand will not only help families that have to evacuate their homes on short notice, but also assist families that must take shelter in their homes over the course of several days.”

The Fire Department provides a complimentary pocket guide that includes detailed information about how to prepare for and deal with specific disasters, including floods, fires, hurricanes, and extreme temperatures.  Residents can obtain a copy of the booklet by calling the Fire Department, at (973) 564-7043.  Residents are also strongly encouraged to enroll in the Township’s CodeRED system, which gives officials the ability to quickly deliver messages to residents in emergency situations.  Residents can enroll online, at www.twp.millburn.nj.us, or by calling the Fire Department.

“There’s a saying in the emergency preparedness field — ‘When the time to perform arrives, the time to prepare has passed,’” said Millburn Fire Chief J. Michael Roberts.  “While we hope that no emergencies will threaten our community, Superstorm Sandy reminded us that disasters can and will occur.  By taking steps to be prepared, residents can keep their homes and their loved ones safe in unexpected situations.”
