MILLBURN, NJ - Playing in the first round of the NJSIAA State Playoffs, Millburn's Girls Volleyball team looked to dispatch the Shawnee Renegades.
Two sets later, the Millers were moving on, beating Shawnee 25-19 in the first set and 26-24 in the second and final set.
"We knew they were a strong team," said Millburn Head Coach Bill Rentiers after the game. "We did have [Shawnee] scouted. We understand they had some very talented players, and we did not take them lightly because we knew they could play."
Rentiers also said that the girls followed the exact path needed to secure a victory in the game.
"I think our team is very smart in how we play," he added. They know how to kind of read their defense well, and understand where to place the ball; whether it's to swing hard or tip over the block.
"We kind of had them scouted a little bit and knew we were going to have to tip over some of their blockers because they're very strong and tall up front. So the girls were good about following the game plan."
Senior Outside Hitter Jess Toledo also spoke after the victory and said that prior scouting of Shawnee was ley to the win.
"We saw that they were tall and a few of us have watched footage of them before," Toledo said. "We were just like; 'If they block us, swing around it, find spots' and we heard that they might not be the best at tipping, so we just wanted to play smart. We're all about playing with energy, so we knew as long as we had that, we could play well."
Toledo also said that during plays with long rallies, she and the other players looked to touch the ball as often as possible, and that all the team's hitters can perform.
Some key performers in the win were as follows:
- Jess Toledo - Four Aces, Four Kills
- Reilly Almgren - Six Kills, Three Blocks
- Stephanie Bai - 11 Kills, Three Blocks
- Taylor Liu -25 Digs
