MILLBURN, NJ — As they filtered outside the doors of the police station yesterday afternoon, officers from the Millburn Police Department were treated to the sight of a display of shiny silver balloon letters spelling out 'thank you.'
That display was part of an effort by a group of Millburn residents to show their support for the department and the officers within. The idea for the balloon display was organized following National Thank a Police Officer Day, celebrated on Sept. 19. For Jillian Braunstein, Millburn resident and co-organizer of the balloon display, seeing the joy on officer's faces was its own reward.
"We're very proud of our police officers in town," Braunstein said. "And we're so happy to do something to say thank you on behalf of all of us who really support and appreciate and honor our law enforcement."
In order to keep the surprise a secret, only a few personnel in the police department were aware that the balloon display was being placed on the front lawn. The joy on officers' faces was evident during the entire ceremony, and multiple officers thanked those in attendance.
Millburn Police Captain and Media Liaison Dave Bonney was among the officers on hand, and said in a brief statement that the gesture of support was welcomed by the department.
"We just greatly appreciate the support from the public," Bonney said. "It's very nice. I waked out here, and I was just-I thought it was very nice that the public did this. Thank you."
Braunstein also added that residents looking to donate to the Millburn PBA 34 can do so by sending or dropping off a check to:
