MILLBURN, NJ — In a post on the Millburn Township website, the police department announced that they would begin their involvement in a program called Project Lifesaver, that helps public safety officials with search and rescue efforts of individuals with cognitive impairment, should they wander off.

In the about us section on its website, Project Lifesaver bills itself as a "501 (C)(3) community based, public safety, non-profit organization" that works to "provide law enforcement, fire/rescue, and caregivers with a program designed to protect, and when necessary, quickly locate individuals with cognitive disorders who are prone to the life threatening behavior of wandering."

Project Lifesaver works by fitting the subjects signed up for the program with a personalized wrist watch-sized radio transmitter that will broadcast a signal and allow township officials to locate them in the event of wandering. Residents with cognitive impairment due to dementia, autism, Down syndrome or any other similar conditions will benefit the most from the program.

In the post, the township noted that there have been over 3,000 successful Project Lifesaver searches have been completed nationally since the project began.

Additionally, recovery times for Project Lifesaver agencies average around 30 minutes. In a traditional search and recovery mission, the agencies take an average of nine hours to locate individuals.
