MILLBURN, NJ – For the month of November, Millburn Police Officers are growing beards as part of the expanding “No-Shave November” charity initiative. The department is using the effort to raise money for Down the Block, a non-profit organization in Millburn that provides financial support to Millburn residents experiencing unforeseen financial need.

“It’s always been a rule that we could not have facial hair other than a mustache,” said Detective Edward de la Fuente.  “We approached the chief and asked if he would allow us to grow beards for No-Shave November to support a non-profit organization, and we would pay for the privilege.”

Police Chief Greg Weber has authorized officers to grow goatees for the month, and officers who wish to participate will make donations to the Millburn Police Department Down the Block Team. Weber authorized goatees rather than full beards due to safety concerns, should the officers need to wear gas masks in an emergency situation.

This is the second year the department has participated in this event for charity. In all, 34 members of the department are participating and donating, including Millburn’s only female officer.

The local Police Benevolent Association (PBA) has agreed to match the department’s contribution to Down the Block, doubling the amount that will be donated.
