MILLBURN, NJ - John McAleavey, a 17-year coach of Millburn Recreation Basketball, was honored with the 2017 Outstanding Service Award from the Millburn Recreation Department.
McAleavey started coaching back in 2001 as an assistant coach for the seventh grade Boys Travel Basketball Team. In 2004 his team won the Suburban League Championship. The following year McAleavey became the head coach of the seventh grade team and in 2007 took over as head coach for the eighth grade boys' team.
McAleavey also spent the last ten years as an instructor at the Recreation Departments' fall basketball clinic for fifth through eighth graders; working with over eighty youths each fall on a wide range of basketball skills. He also volunteers his time as an assistant coach with the Millburn HS freshman boys basketball team.
“Over the years John has been a wonderful example to all the players he comes in contact with on and off the court and is a worthy recipient of this award.” said Neal Healy, assistant superintendent of recreation.
The award is given out to a full-time employee, volunteer, part-time staff member or member of the community who shows dedication, commitment, and that has made significant contributions through outstanding and distinctive service to the recreation department and recreation programs over the years.
